Backing-up your Blog Template has NEVER been more crucial, than in these days of New Blogger. Now the Beta phase is over, with its associated teething challenges, I wouldn't let one chance slip by. If I am touching/tweaking the Template of any of my Blogs, I make a back-up BEFORE and AFTER.
Nor, will it be less important from now on.
It's now just been made SO easy. Anyway, one morning, a few months ago, I awoke from pleasant slumber, with a question on my mind.
How do I back-up my Blogs?
Well, honestly, when I checked Chuck's Blog - (which is my second 'daily' task - the first being a 'cuppa cha'), the answer was right in front of my eyes! Thanks, Chuck!
It took me a total of fifteen minutes, to back-up the Templates from my cuppla Blogs, to back-up files! You see, I didn't like anything to do with HTML, so I NEVER went anywhere near it. Now, I didn't have to tweak anything! Here's how...
Now, I am a somewhat pedantic, so bear with me...
Step 1. Open the 'Layout' from the Dashboard - or, the 'Customise' from the Navbar (if you have one).

Step 2. Click on 'Edit HTML' and then click on 'Download Full Template'.

Step 3. A Pop-Up wizard will appear, displaying your Template ID. Then 'Save to Disk' or 'Save to a Folder' as I do.

Step 4. Save the copy of your template to a pre-set Folder, somewhere on your computer, maybe in 'My Documents' Folder. This is of paramount importance, because you NEVER know when you'll need an updated copy. Even if I am not working on my Templates, I do a regular monthly Back-up copy. I also delete older ones.

Finish by 'Saving' and return to the Blog. Easy.
ALWAYS DO BACK-UPs OF THE TEMPLATE - WHEN WORKING ON IT !

Thanks so much for this. Much easier than I imagined. It only took 10 seconds and was 60 something kbs to save. Does this sound right? Thanks.

Thanks Gayle!
Yes, 60 Kbs is a small blog - maybe 40-50 posts. They are not very big files.
Happy Blogging!
Hi Roberto,
Thank you!
Gayle.
When I try it, i says that the XML-page not i possible to open. What do I do wrong?
Maria
You have NO need to open the XML file. You 'save' it to a folder on your computer, just in case something goes wrong with your blog. Then you can 'upload' it to replace the damaged blog. It's only a 'back-up' file.
I am so close to tears...
I wanted to make a change in my html so I downloaded my entire template file just in case. Well sure enough something went wrong and I wanted to restore the old template.
So... I opened the template file in notepad and copy/pasted it into the Edit Html and hit save. Now there is absolutely nothing on my page but a little arrow and trash can.
I so hope you can help... this is awful :o(
Hi Canace
Well, if you still have the 'saved' or downloaded copy of your template in a folder on your computer, your safe.
There is NO notepad/copy paste involved in uploading a copy of the template back to your blog. Use the second option down from the top of your 'Edit HTML' screen - under 'Download Full Template'. Browse, choose the file and upload.
The whole idea of saving a copy (back-up) is so you do NOT change it, and can use it - as is!
