Comments - How do I get a reply by email?

Sometimes, you may wish to receive notification, by email, that a reply to a comment you have left on someone's blog, has been posted. In other words, the blog owner, or someone else, has replied to your comment, and, to save you from navigating back to that particular blog, and then the particular post, you can be notified by email. That's a great bonus.

Well, it's easy to set up. When you click on 'Post a comment', or whatever it's called on a particular blog, there is a check-box on the Comments Wizard, which gives you the option to select precisely that. Here is a screen print from a blog of mine ... (click on the image to enlarge it in a separate window).

Non-registered Commenters do not have this facility. Naturally, they are anonymous! So therefore, there is no email address. Their Comments pop-up wizard looks like this:

Registered Account holders can use any ID to Comment on a blog, and receive follow-up.

You'll notice on the above image, that ...
  • I have added a Form Message at the top - (optional).
  • Under that Message is the section for your to type your comment.
  • Under that, (in my blog's case), is the Word Verification 'captcha', which I think is essential.
  • Under Word Verification, is 'Choose an Identity'.
  • If you are signed-in, with your Google Account, you'll find the email check-box for 'Email follow-up comments to:'
  • Your email address, attached to that account, appears below that.
  • Check (tick) the box.

Changing Post Date Order

An age-old question appearing from time to time, is: 'How do I change the order of my posts?'

The answer has always been the same - edit the post's date in the Post Editor - manually, individually.

Why? Well, Blogger is dynamic - that means, inter alia, that it displays the latest post first. To change that, you have to do it manually, individually, in the Post Editor.

Now, recently, as you'll see in the above Blogger Help Forum link, some Bloggers suggest changing the blog Archive option "Show Oldest Posts First". That's great - but - only for the Archive Display sequence.

It won't change the order of your blog posts on your Main Page!

So, albeit a very exhausting process, the only way I know of, to change the sequencing of dates, on posts, is to do it individually, and manually. Here, in the next image, is where it is done...

Sorry - there's no short-cuts! Hopefully, the kids at Blogger will find a way, soon.

Commenting - Keep it Simple and Secure

As anyone who regularly reads my posts, on this blog, will appreciate, I usually try to keep things plain and simple, safe and secure. I believe that if you stick to the basics, you, like me, will have trouble-free blogging. It's when you try to perform miracles with your blog, that things can go awry.

When I started blogging, I was lucky to develop a good rapport with Nitecruzr, who probably lost most of his hair because of me, and the questions I asked. However, everyone who blogs will have a learning curve. Some steeper than others. Mine was lessened in severity because Nitecruzr gave me some basic advice. Things like keep it simple, slowly slowly, think it out, remember what you do, how you did it, etc.

Commenting - adding Comments to blogs, and allowing people to comment on your blogs, is one facility which is also best kept simple. There are simple steps to achieve this. To lessen any future problems, there are simple security measures to observe, also.

Allowing Comments on YOUR BLOG

Many bloggers, who visit the Blogger Help Forum, could not possibly have any knowledge of Settings, otherwise they would not have to ask questions. Blogger Settings are like a blueprint for your blog. Yes, I know that the template doesn't appear there, and Colours and Fonts don't appear there, but just about every basic structural component can be controlled from the Settings. Check them out! Don't be afraid to click on them and learn about your blog!

Settings - Comments is easy to follow and understand. The screen can be divided into parts. The 'top' half is mainly concerned with ...
  • 'Showing, or Hiding Comments',
  • 'Who will I allow to comment on my blog?',
  • 'Where, or How will I display Comments?', and
  • 'Will I allow Comments on New Posts?'

The first option in the above image allows you to Show, or Hide, comments which have been made on your blog. By 'Hiding' comments, you can have some form of control over security. If malicious commenters do not 'see' their comments published, they will (hopefully) discontinue commenting. Spammers are a different bucket of slime. Naturally, Comment Moderation is the best for this purpose. You never lose your comments by hiding them, either. They can be 'recovered' when you click 'Show'. Note: Comments can also appear, or be hidden, by use of the Blog Post Page Element - Configure Blog Posts - via the 'Design' screen.

The second option is 'Who Can Comment?' There are four options here:

  • Anyone - includes Anonymous Users. This means 'anyone'. If I chose this option, I would definitely be using Comment Moderation and Word Verification (see below).
  • Registered Users - Includes OpenID. This is probably the best option to use, and the one I choose to use. A Registered User means anyone who has some form of recognisable account, like an Open ID, Google, Yahoo, etc. I still use Word Verification and Comment Moderation, though.
  • Users with Google Accounts. Specific to Google IDs.
  • Only Members of this blog. Specific to Private Members of a Private blog.

The third option is Comment Form Placement. This option is self-explanatory.

The fourth option is Comments Default for Posts. This option dictates whether, or not, you are going to allow Comments on New Posts. This option is also present in the Post Options on the Post Editor - see: - Reader Comments - Allow / Don't Allow.

Note: I will not be including any information about 'Backlinks' in this post series. Why Blogger includes this on the Comments screen confuses me. I think it should be on the Basic Screen.

The next section starts with Comments Timestamp Format. It also contains, what I believe is a MUST for Comments ... SECURITY!

It is important that your Date Timestamp is correct. Self explanatory, again.

You can add a stock-standard Comments Form Message in your Comments box, if you like. This section is well worthwhile. It allows you to explain to your readers about Word Verification and Comments Moderation, like I have above.

Here is the main Security feature - Comments Moderation. Even though you may utilise the New Comments format on Blogger, for it's SPAM facility, (which is essential, I think), Comments Moderation is also essential, if you want control over which comments appear on your blog. Every comment will be sent, via email, to you for approval. It's simple to use. Simply enter your email address in the box.

Word Verification (a Captcha), is also essential. Why? Well, with a word captcha, there is some chance that mechanical Spamming may be reduced. It tries to prove that the commenter is, at least, human. I use it and have had no objections from my readers. Naturally, the author of the post will not be asked to complete this task.


Commenting on someone else's blog requires:
  • The owner to permit Comments. Which level of permission is essential.
  • An ID - either Blogger, Google, OpenID, or 'anyone'.

The process of leaving a comment is roughly the same as for leaving a comment on your own blog.

Now, the last section of the Settings - Comments screen gives you the opportunity to include an image on your comments, when you place them on your own, or someone else's blog. It's called Show Profile Image on Comments? The image will be that of the Profile you use, Blogger, if you select your Blogger ID, Google if you use that. It's up to the blog owner if he/she wants profile photos on the comments of his/her blog!

The last option is to notify up to ten (10) email addresses of Comments placed on the blog.

Deleting a Question from Blogger Forum

This interesting question was posed in the Blogger Help Group Forum, recently...

"OK. So now that I have asked a few questions, how do I delete them?"

The first thing I thought of was, ' - Why?'
The second thing I thought of was, 'Nah - not possible, once it has been answered!'

As you see from Nitecruzr's answer, questions are able to be deleted - BEFORE they are answered.

The reason for that is that someone else may have a similar concern, or problem, to the one you have raised/asked. For them to see your Your question in the Forum, what we call a thread', and the answers (replies) from helpers, then those will possibly save them having to ask, as well. This is the basis for the Help Forum... Group Help. Someone asks a question and helpers try to answer it. Then, others can view it, too.

So, deleting an answered question would defeat the purpose of the Help Forum.

You can delete an unanswered question, or thread, by following Nitecruzr's directions. These directions are exactly the same for deleting an answer to a question thread.

What Are Computer Cookies?

When you visit a Business, such as say, Google, I am sure that you have to sign in, tell them where you want to go, who you want to see, and possibly, why you are there. In most cases, they will give you an ID Tag, with 'Visitor' on it, and sometimes, a number. That way, Google knows how many visitors they have on-site at any time, and that they have to account for them all, at day's end. That's general practice.

It also tells Google where they can find you, if needed. It also tells them who went where, with whom, and helps, overall, with their security. In that case, if all went well, and you didn't cause any problems, Google will know you are an 'OK' person, if you ever decide to come back. If you don't come back, for a long time, maybe you'll have to show Google that you're an 'OK' person all over again, because they may scrap records after a certain time period. Maybe not. That's kewl. No major issue there. Your Visitor record is either a Temporary, or Permanent thing.

If your visit is a Regular, or Permanent arrangement, say every day, week, month, or whatever, Google will most probably give you a different status, if they have such a thing. Maybe, 'Regular Visitor', or your 'Own' ID Tag, with your Photo imprinted on it, name etc, would mean you just clip your ID Tag on yourself, somewhere, and proceed to your destination. Possibly, no sign-in required by you. That would be a Permanent thing. That would be great, in a Utopian world. I'm sure Google would maintain a different kind of record of you, and your visits.

A Computer Cookie is a text file, or, for the sake of this post, an ID Tag, which is stored by a Website, in your computer's Browser (Temporary), or Hard Disk (Permanent), and in it's own database. It is a way of keeping track of, and a record of, information. It may be of any nature - Name, Age, Gender, Race, Religion - whatever. This is one bad-side to Cookies, called Web Profiling, however, this post is not concerned with that aspect of Cookies.

Temporary Cookies:

Temporary Cookies, or 'Session Cookies', are Browser-stored ID Tags, which are deleted when you close your Browser. They work only for a limited time. A Cookie is also a 'Door-Key' that saves the Website from having to re-recognise you when you go to a different page, as it would have to do without Cookies. A Temporary Cookie was created to solve this problem. A record of your visit is also kept by the Website. It tells the Website who you are, what pages you see, so that during your visit, you'll be constantly recognised, and not be kept waiting 'by security', so to speak. This saves a lot of Server time. When deleted, by closing your Browser, these Temporary Cookies are lost, and will have to be re-established next time you visit that site.

Permanent Cookies:

Permanent Cookies, also known as 'Persistent Cookies' are different, in that they are stored in your Hard Disk, not in your Browser. They are a 'Permanent' record. The reason for this is so that, even years from now, the Website Server will recognise your ID Tag (Cookie) and, comparing the details for a match, 'open' the door for you. This type of Cookie saved a lot of Server time and effort wasted by re-recognising Visitors - which required re-connection to a site, each time a new page was visited.

After much outcry from the Public, a change was made to the Cookie Technology. It became possible to turn-off Cookies. This was not possible when Permanent Cookie Technology first appeared, around 1995. It also became possible to create an 'Exemption List' of 'Allowable, or Good Cookies'. This also allowed control of 'Third Party' Cookies.

Transliteration, or Translation?

Many bloggers wish to add text to a post, in a foreign language. There are easy ways to do that.

These two words are similar, though very different...

Trans·lit·er·ate ... [ pron: tranz-lit-uh-reyt ] - a verb.
To change (letters, words, etc.) into corresponding characters of another alphabet, or language: eg: to transliterate the Greek 'X' as 'Ch'.

Trans·late ... [ pron: tranz-leyt ] - a verb.
To change one language into another, or a foreign language into your own. eg: to translate Spanish into English.

Google has many avenues for Transliteration, depending on the product used, and many languages available. However, in Blogger, as at the time of writing this post, only nineteen languages can be Transliterated :

  • Amharic
  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Greek
  • Persian
  • Gujarati
  • Kannada
  • Hindi
  • Malayalam
  • Marathi
  • Nepali
  • Punjabi
  • Russian
  • Sanskrit
  • Serbian
  • Tamil
  • Telugu
  • Tigrinya
  • Urdu

Google also provides a Translation Language Tool, which works wonderfully well. It's what I use if I want to add some text in a foreign language, as well as English. Currently, there are about 50+ languages on the interface, with more in Beta. So, there really is no reason you can't type text in a language of choice - unless it is one which hasn't been interfaced, as yet.

What are the differences?

As you can see from the above definitions, Transliteration is for changing letters, or words, into a corresponding alphabet, or language. Blogger's Transliteration feature is a phonetically-based system. It is NOT a Translator. It is fairly straight forward and I will not be explaining it further, here. Suffice to say, that using Transliteration on your Post Editor, allows you to change one word, or a whole section of text in a post. You choose by highlighting.

To enable this feature, go to the Settings - Basics page, select Enable for the transliteration option, and select your preferred language. This setting will affect all blogs on your account. Then, on your Post Editor, you'll notice a button ...

For further instructions in the use of Transliteration, see Blogger Help.

Transliteration allows you to type in English, and then transliterate certain Roman characters into the selected Indic characters, of a language such as Tamil, or Hindi (see above). This lets you type these languages phonetically in English script and still have them appear in their correct alphabet. Note that this is not the same as translation - the 'sound' of the words is converted from one alphabet to the other, not the meaning. If you find that you'd prefer a different sound, then you can change it.

n.b.: I recommend that you view the section of Blogger Help entitled "Installing and Viewing Indic Fonts". It covers certain information re: Browsers.

Transliteration does NOT work for the Title section, or Labels section, of a post!

Translation, on the other hand, is entirely different. As yet, there is no Translator option available on Blogger Editor. However, the Blogger interface allows and supports foreign language fonts, depending on the Browser used.

Translation of minor, or major blocks of text, can be done in quick fashion. The Google Language Tool provides interfaces for over 50 languages - including Hindi. The other languages available in Transliteration, are not yet available on the Language Tool.

eg; - If I wanted to translate this passage of text into, say, Russian, I could. I would simply type it into the Language Tool, select the language and click on 'Translate'.

Then, I highlight and copy the translation, and paste it to my Post Editor ...
note: I always copy straight to Notepad first, in case there is any formatting to be cleared!

One major concern though, is the occasional hiccup in the reverse-translation ... although I can only presume a Russian person would understand what was meant in the original script, sometimes they don't. I tried sending a letter to a Thai friend, translated it faithfully from English into Thai, sent it, and she couldn't make sense of it!

- If I wanted to translate this piece of text into, say, Russian, I could. I would just enter it into an instrument of language, select English to Russian language, and click - Translate.

Google's Language Tool is kewl - fast, generally efficient, and translations are accepted into the Title field, as can be seen here, and also (I believe) Labels fields, if selected.

Depending upon choice, Transliteration, and Translation are two mighty tools for the busy blogger. Not all bloggers would use Transliteration, though could use Translation. It's YOUR choice!

Blogger Stats - Censor Your Pageviews

Blogger Stats is a 'real-time' analysis of your blog traffic. It should, by definition, include all visits to your blog - even your own. This can be misleading and tends to inflate the 'true' visitor figures. Blogger realised this and now provides an option for you to censor the figures, eliminating your visits.

This is great - but, it needs to be explained that it is on a per-browser basis. That means, if you use more than one browser, you'll have to re-set this blocking feature for each. It's a ten-second job, if that.

As yet, one feature I would like to see, and don't, is a 're-set' option - to clear already gathered data and re-start the count. Maybe one day.

How Do I add Text in a Foreign Language?

Every now and then, a blogger may wish to add a word to a post, which is written in a Foreign Language.

The word could be in an entirely different script, such as Japanese ( 日本語 ) , Greek ( Ελληνικά ) or even Spanish ( Español ). Maybe you need a word displayed with its accents!

You might like to include a phrase, or paragraph of text, in that Foreign Language, like Bulgarian. That's easy, too! Винаги използвайте Google Инструменти език, когато трябва да добавите чужд език Текст към моя пост! ( I always use Google Language Tool when I need to add Foreign Language text to my post!).

Fortunately, this is not difficult to do with the availability of the Google Language Tool - and it doesn't require a degree in Linguistics, either.

There is, however, one thing to remember - copy the text to Notepad first - then copy that to your blog post. The reason for this is to remove any formatting which Google Language Tool may employ, such as mouse-over pop-up translations.

You might even like to provide a Translation service for your readers... in English, or a Foreign Language?

The New Comments system on Blogger

I'm sure the bloggers, lucky enough to have this new feature, will agree with me that it looks great!

Blogger has celebrated it's 11th birthday with a new Comments system - and it's about time! This one looks very shiny, and is as simple as it can be, yet as complex as it should be. Blogger has integrated Google's SPAM filter into this feature, and it will give bloggers everywhere a safer experience - if they use it!

The indication that you have the new Comments system on your blog, is that you will see a new 'Tab' - Comments : -

Click on that Tab, and the next image/screen will appear. This screen gives you three (3) viewing options:

  • Published Comments
  • Comments awaiting moderation (if you have it selected)
  • Suspected SPAM comments

This sleek system provides an alternative to the tiresome email-way of getting comments, moderating them, clicking on Publish etc. It really is convenient.

Removing Comments is also very easy. Blogger has provided a Tab called 'Remove Content'. This feature allows the author of the comment, or the blog owner, to remove the content of a comment, yet retain a record that there was a comment made. This could be handy for your stats, or personal reasons.

Summary? I think it's great. It's sleek, shiny, and works! Unusual for Blogger to attain all of those in one go! (Now, it's just a matter of waiting for something else to explode! ha ha ha!)

If you are a regular visitor to the Blogger Help Forum, you may, occasionally, see this question asked;

"How do I delete a blog when the owner has died? No-one knows the password!"

Well, it's not a nice situation to be in, I would imagine. I was actually discussing this question with my mate recently, which undoubtedly prompted him to write his post on this subject.

Foreign Language Translators

As I previously mentioned, back in December, for readers to be able to translate your blog into their language, is very convenient, and will increase the time they spend on your blog. It will also increase your readership, which we all want.

For over two years, Nitecruzr and I, have been slowly building our Language Translator gadget, and, apart from being able to translate English blogs into about 50+ other languages, we also worked on Cumulus Language Blogs - our project for Foreign Language blogs. We now have about 11 of these blogs, plus English, to show how easy it is to provide translations for your readers.

Why only 11? The reason is that we picked some of the most spoken languages in the world to do, first. Don't worry, I'm sure there will be more - very soon.

The ease with which this Translator gadget works, has to be seen to be believed. You can now provide this service to your readers. It's as simple as adding the 'code' to an html/Javascript gadget.

Share Buttons May Need Post Template Re-setting

Yesterday, I wrote about the problem I was having to display the new Share Buttons. I discussed this problem with Nitecruzr, and he suggested that it might be a Post Template Corruption. He was correct.

That's no big deal - it often happens when Blogger programmers don't think about the changes they are making. They make changes, add something, and make something else worse. The answer is a simple tweaking of the Post Template - to update it.

The following steps are as best as I can provide, to show how to do this. One question which will undoubtedly be asked is -

'Why do I copy, and then remove a piece of code, only to replace it?'

The reason is that you need to remove the piece of code, and replace it, in order to force the 'updating' of the Post Template. Of course, copying it first is sensible. Here's how ...

Step 1. - Navigate to the Edit HTML screen

Step 2. - Make a copy of your template - (need I tell you why? I don't think so)

Step 3. - Find the following piece of code - copy it, and delete it, then 'Save' the template changes

Step 4. - You will be asked to confirm the deletion - do so.

Step 5. - Replace the piece of code which you copied IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE, and 'Save'.

Step 6. - Navigate to the Page Elements screen.

Step 7. - Re-configure the Blog Post widget and select 'Share Buttons' - then 'Save'.

Step 8. - Make another copy of your blog template

Step 9. - Clear the Browser cache, restart the Browser, and reload the blog.

Blogger Share Buttons

I love to add Blogger options to my blog post page. I always try their new things, here, on this blog, or on a test blog (normally). Sometimes, I like them so much I add them permanently to the blog. Sometimes, I don't. Then, again, sometimes, I have NO CHOICE! The damn things won't work - not always, anyway.

Blogger recently released the Share Buttons, which you are supposed to add to your blog, via the Design screen - Edit Post configuration. Simple enough. That's what I did - 100 times, or thereabouts. It didn't matter what I did, the buttons would not show on my post. Why? Well, I do not know - all I can do is accept that it may be a result of post template corruption, which is what was suggested by Nitecruzr.

We tested this on a fresh, new blog, and it worked...

The problem appears to be non-existent on New Blogs, but appears on 'older' Layouts > New Designer template blogs. Those that have been upgraded. All my current blogs were Layouts blogs before I upgraded them to the New Designer Templates. Now, although the script for the Share Buttons appears in my templates, the icons do NOT appear of my posts! I can't figure that one.

So, it appears that Nitecruzr has thought about this overnight, and come up with ... see < HERE >
It requires a very simple tweaking of the template, as described < HERE >.

Follow ALL the steps he suggests, clear the browser cache, and then 'add' the Share Buttons option to your Blog Posts configuration - again.

Settings - Your 'in-flight' Control Panel

I don't visit the Help Forum as much as I used to. I got a little bit peeved with what seemed, at the time, to be the same old questions, ad nauseam. It appeared to me that bloggers found it a lot easier to ask a question of someone else, rather than search for an answer themselves, or to think.

I know, from memory, that starting out in the world of Blogger, or even, for that matter, using a computer, can be mind-boggling and even shattering to the confidence levels. That's normal in any new field, I think, but there are a few tips to help alleviate problems. I was lucky. I found a friend who was prepared to help me - but he always tested me by pointing me in the right direction to find out the answers for myself, to help myself, to evaluate situations with the available information at hand. He also got me into the Help Forum and showed me how to research, and learn. His guidance was extremely beneficial to me.

Other people have the same problems as you do, and their questions have, generally, been asked and answered before, at another time, by someone else. Finding those answers can be tricky, but searching Blogger Help will bring those answers to light. Also, learning about your blog, from your blog, will, too.

Don't get me wrong, bloggers of experience still ask questions, as do most novice bloggers I know of. It's a way of learning, but they try to find the answers first. Experienced bloggers still have confidence challenges, too. I'm sure everyone does, to some degree.

Blogger, itself, gives you everything you'll need, to create, 'run', and maintain your blog. They give you:

One of the above areas that I have spent a lot of time looking at, is the blog Settings. There are so many options available to you there. Questions can be answered there. Problems solved. Become familiar with your Settings, and you'll feel so much more confident. To employ a poor analogy, it's your 'in-flight Control Panel'.

For example, here's a question from the Help Forum, which should never have been asked:

The answer to this question lies in the Settings - Comments. If you don't want to allow people to comment on your blog, don't give them the opportunity - hide the function - Option 1 on the Settings - Comments screen.

You can also allow, or hide the Comments function, from the Design Screen - Configure Blog Post (Edit) option. You can also allow, or hide, comments for a particular post when you edit that post, see: - Post Options.

Here's another example of a question asked, when knowledge of Settings, would have averted it:

Stats - Blogger's New Feature

For many readers, and bloggers, the news of Blogger's new feature, STATS, is 'old news'. That's because many bloggers have a Blogger in Draft newsfeed and keep up to date, or, they use Blogger in Draft as their default platform/Dashboard, and have noticed the new Tab.

Many bloggers will also be very happy to see this (long-overdue)feature, is now available to them. Blogger has come up with a very useful tool, which, for some, will replace the need to add a Counter into a gadget, and clutter-up their sidebars, or footers. However, it's entirely subjective as to what individuals like. Personally, I will still use Statcounter and Sitemeter in conjunction with these new 'real-time' Stats.

The STATS provide up-to-date, or 'real-time' statistics for your blog traffic. Everything from a general overview of visitors and where they came from, to which pages they viewed, and which Browser they employed to find your blog. Now, some bloggers will ask why it's necessary to know those things, and I hope to cover some of the reasons, in this post.

When you click on the Stats Tab, Blogger takes you to the Overview screen, where you can access ALL of the current and past Stats for your blog's traffic - Now, Last Day, Last Week, Last Month and All Time. Naturally, as this feature was only been introduced in May, statistics prior to then, are not included.

The above Overview screen also provides links to 'more' information, such as Posts, Traffic Sources, and Audience. These can be clicked on to open, individually, on a separate screen.

OK, so why do I need to know all that stuff?

There are many reasons why this information is important to most bloggers. For instance, where are the majority of my readers coming from? This tells me where my blog is getting read, and where it isn't. Then, I can perhaps tailor my posts, or keywords/sitemaps, to open a larger viewing audience.

Why would I want to know which Browser someone uses? Well, as you can see in the above image, 62% of my readers use Internet Explorer, and 18% use Firefox, so it's essential that my blog is viewable in both of those Browsers. How do I know if it is? It's a good habit to view your own blog in a few different Browsers, as they can vary in main-page width, for example. If your blog doesn't load properly in all Browsers, people will not view it!

Why do I care which Posts my Readers read? Apart from the obvious, it's essential if you wish to maintain, or increase Traffic to your blog - give people what they want to read! This allows you to tailor your posts to requested topics.

Why would I want to know how someone came to my blog? The reason for this is manifold. Other bloggers will use links to your blog, to interest their readers, or support points they are making. Other sites drive traffic to your blog by doing this. It also notifies you of sources of interest so you can, once again, tailor your blog to readers' wants.

The new Stats feature provides all this information in a very useful way. It's fast, apparently accurate, and presented in a readable, and readily understandable, manner. Good one, Blogger.

Transferring Ownership of a blog

Many bloggers ask:

"How do I change the account that operates my blog?" Or,
"I want to transfer the blog to another account." Or,
"I started the blog with this email, and want to change it to another email account." etc

All these situations are, basically, the same... they refer to transferring Ownership of a blog.

Nothing could be easier than transferring Ownership of a blog - it's just time consuming and requires attention. BUT - make sure you do it correctly!

Blogger refers to this process under their 'Team Blogs - How do I move a blog between accounts?' section of Blogger Help, in - Team Blogs, Authors, and Readers

Let's say you have a blog, and the owner is ABC@whatever email account. In a nutshell, say you want to transfer the blog from ABC@whatever email account, to DEF@ whatever email account. Transferring the Ownership of the blog can be listed in steps: (It's easier if you open two Browser sessions - one in each of two different Browsers! Open one session with ABC@ email, and one with DEF@ email.)

  • Open the Settings - Permissions screen of the blog, with ABC@ email, and send an Invitation to DEF@ ...etc, to join the blog.
  • Go to the other Browser session for DEF@ email account and 'accept' the Invitation - using that account's name and password. (You maybe asked to create an account, during this stage, if you haven't already.) You will notice that a Dashboard appears, with 'limited' access options. This is normal - and a Dashboard for 'Author' access.
  • Go back to the blog's 'Settings - Permissions' screen, (ABC@ email), and when you Refresh it <F5>, you'll see that DEF@... etc, is now listed as an 'Author'.
  • Click on where it says "grant admin privileges", and make DEF@... etc, into an 'Admin' for the blog.
  • Then, and only then, go to Blogger using the DEF@... etc account (or, Refresh <F5> the session you are already using on the other Browser). You'll see a Dashboard with the blog listed. You'll notice it has changed. It should have FULL options listed. Check that you have FULL access to all components of the blog.
  • If you then click on 'Settings", from the new Dashboard, then 'Permissions', you will see both email accounts listed as 'Admin' of the blog, and at the far right, the word 'remove' next to each.
  • If you click on 'remove' next to ABC@ ... etc, then DEF@... etc, will become the sole owner of the blog.
  • You will also notice, that there is NO 'Remove' next to the sole 'Admin' of the blog - DEF@ email account! That's so you can't remove yourself!

The blog Ownership is now transferred from ABC@whatever, to DEF@whatever. Simple as, but confusing. Take it - one step at a time!

Unfortunately, this is the only way to do it.


Following - How to STOP - from the Navbar Option

Back in September, last year, I posted on How to Stop Following. Then, in May, this year, I wrote Following - Why Can't I Stop?

Well, today, I had to ask myself that very question - why can't I stop? I tried all the steps which worked before (otherwise I would not have written it up). Guess what? They didn't work! Frustrating.

So, what did I do? Well, I started at the very beginning - I started to Follow a blog. I went through the steps required - both from clicking on Follower gadget, adding a URL, and clicking on the Navbar Follow option. This was very time consuming. Then, I tried to STOP. Only the Navbar option gave me success. Even 'Manage' wouldn't help me. I was signed-in to Blogger, too! (Ha Ha - There's a catch in itself! You should be signed-in to Blogger AND Follower / Friend Connect!)

Notice on this next image, that I started to Follow my own blog, Pauper's Plate. It's highlighted in the Reading List.

I clicked on the link to the Blog itself, and then clicked on the Follow option in the Navbar...

This next image shows what options I got ...
  • You already follow Pauper's Plate
  • Stop Following
  • Cancel

I clicked on Stop Following ...

Now, Pauper's Plate has vanished from my Reading List. I have successfully stopped Following that blog.

I still do NOT know why Blogger has changed this, but obviously, they have. Too many people have reported NOT being able to stop, for something not to have been changed by Blogger. It is also very important to use the correct Profile! Which one are you using?

Blog Language Translation Option - Update - June 2010

Latest update : Mar. 2017 - This Language gadget is no more, a viable alternative to the Blogger gadget, seen in my Sidebar. Thanks to all who supported us.

For those of my Readers who use the blog Language Translator gadget, which I have displayed at the top of my blogs, there has been an update from Google Language Tool.

The additional Language is Haitian Creole.

To add the additional code, simply copy the following, and paste it into your gadget. You should now have 50+ workable languages translation options. Don't forget to also check out the Cumulus Blogs Foreign Language blogs if you publish a blog in a Foreign Language! Links are on this blog!

Blog Listing, and Blog Search - Settings Basic

Some bloggers often ask questions concerning some aspect of listing their blog, or having their blog crawled by the Search Engines. Maybe, they do not want either. These two options have a great impact on your blog's traffic and eventual Page Rank.

Listing a blog, allows it to appear when Readers click on Blogger Home Page, Next Blog, Blogger Play, or link to it from other sites.

If you choose NOT to be included in this option, your blog will not appear in those places but will still be available on the Internet. Unlisted blogs will also appear on your Profile, unless hidden by you.

As far as Blog Search is concerned, Google/Blogger is one of the many companies utilising as a notifier of Updated Blogs. What does do? is a Ping Server which automatically notifies subscribers when new content is posted to a website, or a blog. Blogger gives you the option to have your blog crawled by search engines. This allows your readers to search your updated blog, and also all other blogs - from various places.

If you choose NOT to enable this feature, your blog will still be available on the Internet, and people will still be able to view it, but it will NOT be crawled by the Google Search Engine spider, and will NOT appear in Blog Search.

Changing a Cname alias on your Domain

Earlier this week, I had reason to change the URL of a blog. The blog URL was published to my Domain, and the Cname 'alias' didn't suit my new blog theme. I needed to change it. It was the easiest thing to do, but involved many steps.

Fortunately, I used an old 'stub blog' with no Followers, or subscribers, so there was no-one to notify, and the name was one I didn't care about possible SPAMMERS getting hold of. You see, I NEVER delete a blog! I just store unused blogs on another account.

So, what did I have to do?

Firstly, I had to change the Cname alias on my Domain Control Manager. That's as easy as signing in to Google Apps, then signing in to GoDaddy, and navigating to the Domain Manager, Total DNS Control screen.

I selected the URL of the 'old' blog, and clicked on the Edit button (Pencil and Paper).

I made the change and clicked OK...

Then, I made sure I logged-off properly, and proceeded to the blog Settings - Publishing screen.

Secondly, I had to publish the blog back to BlogSpot - to it's original URL. That's no problem, either. Then, I simply followed these steps to re-publish the blog back to the new Cname alias on my Domain.

I also listed the new blog on Google Webmaster.

Language - Checking your settings.

There are quite a few places to check the Language settings for your blog - and computer. I covered all this previously, and now, it's time for an update.

Some bloggers still report that their blogs load in a foreign language. To ensure that all your settings are in your preferred language, let's say English, for this exercise, it's good to make sure ALL possibilities are covered.

The first place I would check, is the Windows Control Panel - Regional and Language Options. There are three options there. The Control Panel options will ensure that your computer is set to your preferred Language.

Also, if English is your preferred language, I recommend selecting English - US, and making allowances for their spelling differences. Why? Well, Google is American, and I once had problems due to spelling differences on my computer, using centre, instead of center!

My next choice would be to check the Browser settings. In this example, I have Firefox. To check the Language setting, click on Tools from the Toolbar - Menu Bar. Then select Content, then click Choose.

The last steps are with Blogger. The Dashboard shows two options for setting the Language of the blog. One is at the very top on the right, above where the blogs are listed, and the other is at the very bottom of the Dashboard. For safety, I'd check both.

Language Selection option, takes you to the Language Selection.

The last steps are with the actual blog, itself. The first Setting to check, is on the Basic Screen. Make sure that Transliteration is disabled, and not set to one of those available languages .

The next option is on the Settings - Formatting Screen - Languages.

Now, the most important part - CLEAR YOUR BROWSER CACHE! RE-BOOT YOUR BROWSER! (Otherwise, it would nearly all be in vain. Your Browser will display cached copy. You have to reset it, make it re-visit your blog, to get a new copy!)
