Do I need a Gmail account for Blogger?

Do I have to have a Gmail Account to log in to Blogger?

The answer to this much asked question, is NO.

All you need is a Google Account, which you can create using any legitimate email account and password.

So, what is a Google Account?

According to Wikipedia, "A Google Account is a user account which provides access to Google-owned services such as Blogger, YouTube, and Google Groups. A Google Account can be identified either by the username (usually the associated email address) or by their unique permanent ID."

Blogger describes a Google Account in this way; "A Google Account functions as a single Google login, made up of an email address and password of your choosing. It gives you access to various Google services, including AdWords, Google Groups, Google Alerts, Froogle Shopping List, Personalized Search, your Personalized Homepage, and Google Answers. If you've used any of these services before, you already have a Google Account."

Having a Gmail account is great because it has an in-built Google Account, and many other benefits.

Everything else, you may need to know, about getting started, can be found on this Blogger Help page.

How an Extension Influenced my Blogger.

About 1 year ago, I came back to blogging, and looked over the blogs and posts I had done over 15 years. Something was missing. I couldn't put my finger on it, until I went to click on 'New Post', and discovered it was my NAVBAR that was missing. Strange, I thought. I'd read about people deleting the Navbar, on purpose (really strange), and having known I didn't do that, I asked myself; 'How in the world did that happen?' Everything was alright when viewing in Firefox, but I choose to use Google Chrome.

I immediately looked at the Layout screen, and inspected the gadget, then even inspected the Design, for some reason. Everything was hunky-dory. So, slightly amazed that this sort of thing can happen, (and goodness knows with Blogger), I just went about posting another way. A few months later, I mentioned it to someone I'd known, and asked about it. I didn't get much, if any, help from that source. Then finally, yesterday, I'd had it, so I decided to pose the question of why, on the Blogger Help Forum.

I got some initial ideas from 'Do Not Track' suggestions, until finally, one young fellow, Prayag Verma's reply, hit the nail on the head, when he suggested to disable all the Extensions I'd added to Google Chrome, open Chrome naturally (not in in cognito mode) and see if the Navbar returns. OK, what have I to lose? So I disabled all the Extensions ...

Immediate success. 'Bingo', I cried, and hailed Prayag, via Blogger Help, with a 'Best Answer'. After re-enabling the Extensions one by one, I found the problem Extension to be the 'avast online security' Extension, which was 'not from Chrome web store'.

If any Blogger has this problem with Browsers, especially Google Chrome, namely Extensions that are NOT from Google Chrome Web Store, they might try disabling them.
