The Blog Team Member Invitation Process

The Blog Invitation comes in two types:- 1) The Team Member Invitation - Author, or Administrator. 2) The Blog Reader - for Private Blogs.

The Process of Invitation is virtually the same for both, but the end result is vastly different for the Invitee. The Invitation Process starts on the bottom of the Settings-Basic - Permissions screen.

Click the option 'Add authors', and add the email address for the person you want to add to the blog, then click the orange 'Invite authors' button ...

Meanwhile, back at his place, 'Bob' receives an emailed Invitation from me, to join 'the Report' blog.

To accept the Invitation, Bob has to log into his Google Account, and then actually 'Accept Invitation'. You'll also notice that the Invitation has an 'Expiration Date', one month in the future. If Bob doesn't have a 'Google Account', he will be prompted to create one.

Then, when he accepts the Invitation, he progresses to his Blogger Dashboard, where the blog is then accessible. He can see ALL POSTS, but he can only CREATE posts and EDIT posts, written by himself. He has NO OTHER CAPABILITIES - unless he is made an 'Administrator' ('Admin').

This is when, and where, an existing 'Admin' (me), changes Bob's Author status to 'Admin'. In the following image, the numbers represent ... 1) I can see who is listed, 2) I can see their membership status, 3) Drop-down menu to change Status, 4) Delete Team Member, and 5) The Blog Status.

Changing Bob's status from 'Author' to 'Admin'. ( Possible-worst-case-scenario? Bob is now Power-Hungry, and sets about ditching you, me, and Chuck, from our blog! Should have foreseen that possibility, but I thought he was a friend. How can I get my blog back? I'll go to Blogger Help Forum ). Phew! Thank goodness that was a dream, but it could have happened!

REMEMBER: You wouldn't take yourself off the Admin control panel of a blog, unless there was a good reason, but another Admin could. Be careful who you invite, and make 'Admin' !

Making a blog 'Private', is just a mouse click, or two, away. The process of Invitations is, basically, the same.

Changing the Blog's Status from Public to Private, and sending Invitations to Readers. The Readers have to sign-in each time they view the blog. They must also Create a Google Account.

The Invitation can only be used ONCE, for whatever the use.

Blog Author Vs. Blog Administrator - (Revised)

This is an Updated Post from Dec. 2009.

A blog's Team-membership Status , is either Author, or Administrator, and/or, of course, that of Invited Reader, (on a Private blog).

Basically, there are two roles to operate a blog:-

1) Author - an Author can Create Posts, Edit those Posts which he/she created, on the blog. That's all.

2) Administrator - an Administrator, or 'Admin' can Add, or Remove, other Administrators, and Authors, change the blog's Settings, or Template, and Edit, or Delete Posts, made by other Authors, or Administrators. He/she is the 'BOSS of the BLOG'. They have total control of the blog.

By Default, your blog is Public - anyone can view it. The alternative is to make it Private, and select those people who have access to it, either to contribute by authorship, just for viewing purposes. The latter are referred to as 'Blog Readers'.

There are three (3) choices for you to make, as an 'Admin', when considering access to your blog:-

Whether to make your blog ...

1) Public - anyone can see the Blog and Posts.

2) Private - Only blog authors - Your blog is restricted so that only blog authors can read it. Other visitors to this blog will NOT be able to read any posts. They will get a message stating that this is a private blog. Or,...

3) Private - Only these readers - You can restrict your blog to only Readers you choose. However, these readers will need to log in before reading your blog, adding an extra step. Blogger will save your Readers List for you, so you can switch back at any time.

You control all this by accessing the Settings - Basic screen - PERMISSIONS. At the bottom of that screen, are your choices and a list of those people you chose. Remember, you can't have a blog with part Public, part Private. It's all, or nothing. These choices also lead to another Blogger phenomenon - The Invitation. You are required to Invite other Team Members to your blog. This is a simple process which is often complicated, either through fault, or design.

Happy Blogging !

Mode Syntax Checker Problem with HTML Editor

This problem was first reported by the Real Blogger Status blog, 'The HTML Mode Syntax Checker is out of Control'. It has now blossomed into a spasmodic problem. Last week, it was an annoyance. This week it's a complete pain in the html Post Editor.

The Checker doesn't give you time to complete your end syntax; eg: < span > and < /span >, or < div > < /div > before it farts, and splats your screen with the Pink Wall of Frustration ! Even if your html is correct, it seems to find an erroneous error when you Publish, and splat. The Pink Blob of Blogger appears. It locks up your screen, and short of tearing your remaining hair out, there's only a few ways to alleviate the problem:-

  • You can back out of the Post Editor, which loses all your work, after you last 'SAVE'. Pain.

  • You can, as Chuck says, zoom out until you can see all of the Editor, straining your eyes in the process, and fix the missing syntax, then WAIT. WAIT. WAIT.

Chuck also says that this problem is being looked at by the Blogger Engineers.

It's only happened three times to me, today !

Google+ - whether you want it, or not.

I've turned Google+ sharing, (or, linking) off. I don't want it. I don't want my posts going to Google+. That's why I turned it - OFF !

BUT - Blogger Engineers can't seem to understand what I mean by NO.

This is a slightly different problem than the one Chuck, on the Real Blogger Status blog, has reported. On my Recipes blog, I don't (I did, but don't, anymore) get the 'Gray Screen of Death', although I do on a couple of other blogs. Frustrating? Yes. Annoying? Definitely !

When you turn Google+ off, this is not supposed to happen ...

Fix it, please, Mr. Blogger.
P.S. and it just happened to this blog post!

Re-Publishing to blogspot.com, then back to a Custom Domain

It's hard to believe that it's been 5 years since I wrote a post on this subject. That means it's been about 5 years since I created Robertosblogs-dot-net, and about the same time the Nitecruzr (Chuck) created his fantastic blog, the Real Blogger Status. I remember it fairly well, because Chuck helped me a lot during those times, with Technical advice. You see, the way things were done was a lot different those days, and I was a relative Blogging-Newbie of four, or so, years experience .

I had a small problem today, with Publishing to my Custom Domain and the ubquitous, 'www.'. I forgot to include it the first time, so had to re-publish to Blogspot.com, and then correct it. I'll also have to write it up, so that it updates the previous post on the subject...see: above.

Re-publishing from a Custom Domain to Blogspot.com, is easy - nowadays. The Settings-Basic screen has changed a lot, in this regard. Re-publishing is just a couple of mouse-clicks away.

I must stress, that there is an order in which you do this. You can't just change the Custom Domain URL and hope things will be OK. You have to cancel the wrong one, and this automatically re-publishes to Blogspot.com. Make sure the basic Blogger blog URL is correct. Also, I always close the blog, and re-open it after I do any change - then, make a copy of the template.

Happy Blogging !

Manage Blogs I'm Following.

After a long break from Blogging, many things have changed, many GUIs have been updated, the way you do certain things has been altered, and there is a desperate need to check them, or possibly re-furbish posts, etc.

One in particular, is the way you manage Following, for your Reading List. Many months ago, I asked 'Why Do You Follow a Blog'? The reasons may not have changed, but the way in which you do, certainly has - for the better, I must admit. People stop blogging, or concentrate their efforts in other directions, such as another blog, or blogging platform (not everyone loves Blogger). So, your Reading List of blogs may need updating.

The new GUI for Adding a Blog to Follow, or changing the way you Follow - Publicly or Anonymously, or Stop Following a blog, makes it easier.

You can Add a Blog to Follow from the Reading List screen, or you can navigate to the Manage screen, by mouse-clicking the Gear Wheel.

From this screen, you can Delete a Blog (Stop Following), or Add a Blog, or change the way you're Following - Publicly or Anonymously, at the click of the mouse.

Thanks, Blogger !

Pinterest - Easy to Obtain, and Install on your Blog.

What is PINTEREST ? It is a Website App that allows you to create a 'Pin Board' for photos - instantly. Instead of bookmarking a photo, or Notepadding the URL, or sending yourself an email, or perhaps printing off what you want, then keeping a paper file in your office, all you have to do is click on the Pinterest icon.

Apart from the icon for your blog, there is also an Extension for your computer's Browser Toolbar, so you can also 'Pin' images to your account, from anywhere. You can invite other people to view your 'Boards' and 'Pin" or 'Re-Pin' images from their 'Boards', or contribute to your board albums. You can even have some 'boards' private - and it is addictive, but easy. I know. I've been at it all afternoon and evening!

As the Nitecruzr, Chuck, says in his RBS blog post;
"I spent more time reading the instructions, than installing the icon."

What we're referring to is the Pinterest 'Pin it' icon, a mouse-over link for the images on my blogs. Just navigate to the Pinterest website, join up with your email, verify that email when Pinterest send you an email, then, create the code script - Remember to select the 'Image Hover' option, when selecting the 'Button Type'. The actual code resembles this :-

<!-- Please call pinit.js only once per page -->
<script async defer data-pin-hover="true"
src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js"></script>

All you do then is to add it to a html/Javascript Gadget from the Layout screen on your blog, and hide it at the bottom, purely for aesthetics - save - and it's done. There's no need to add it to the template, above the </body> tag, as Pinterest Developers suggest.

When you look at any image on your blog, and mouse-over it, you'll see the little 'Pin it' icon appear.

Your account will look similar to mine -

Start saving images from all over the Internet, and have them ready to view - all in one, convenient, place !

Bcc on Emails - Use it!

From 2013 - Re-Published today, to bring it back to mind !!!

I have talked about this problem, time and time again, concerning its potential, and its potency. Nitecruzr has written about it - many times. He reminded me again, today, just how serious this challenge is, and how easy it is to fall into the 'pit' of problems associated with email addressing.

Click on where it says 'Add Bcc', then you get the next screen, which allows you to insert addresses in the Bcc...

OK. I suppose I did it when I first heard of email, years ago. I 'grouped' all my friends together and typed one email to them all, thinking how 'techie' I was. At that time, I was, relatively speaking.

There were NO real problems, because there were no DIRTY, ROTTEN, STINKING, LOW-LIFE, HUMAN DETRITUS, SPAMMERS to speak of, or at least they weren't as mechanically equipped as they are today, and there was also, only a fraction of the email volume of today. I can't begin to think of the amount of transmissions which go through Email Servers each and every day, these days. Incredible.

I had an Internet 'friend' who always visited my blogs, leaving comments etc. Then our association grew to the email stage. All was going well until one day, I received an email, which was addressed to over 50 other people - with MY address included! I nearly died on the spot. What a putz! I was peeved and I let him know - in no uncertain terms. You know what he said? - "There's no problem. I have an anti-virus program!" Unbelievable, isn't it? He no longer visits. Oh, well.

I even had a Blog*Star do it to me! You'd think he would know better!

Well, as Euripides said;

"Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish."

Similarly, there's an old idiom which says;

"Some people are like owls - the more light you shine on them, the less they see!"

I prefer; -

"You can send a person to college, but you can't make them think!"

So, what to do?

* If you want to email more than one person, add YOUR address, to what I call the "Address To:" section. In other words, send it to yourself!
* Click on "Bcc" and add all the rest of the names/addresses - or even a group of names. It's safe, here. No-one can see ay other person's address!

Bcc stands for Blind Carbon Copy. It was designed, I believe, for the office memo, so the Boss could send a copy of a memorandum to another person, other than the prime addressee, without the addressee's knowledge! There is also the cc, which does allow others to know who gets a copy, but still lists their address! Don't use it! Only use Bcc!

So, if you don't want to have your email address bandied around the 'net, use the Bcc! - PLEASE!

On ALL my emails, I usually have a signature which states:

SECURITY REQUEST - PLEASE:
Do NOT include my Email Address in any 'Group' Addressing, if it is your normal habit to do so.

Use only Bcc for me! This will help ensure the 'Spammers' don't win! Why?

1) Because someone on your Address List will become 'infected', some time.
2) Because I don't want my address advertised to unknown people, and
3) Because I asked you nicely!
4) If you can't comply with this simple request, then erase my address from your contacts list!

Thanks,
