Blog Language Translation Option - Update - June 2010

For those of my Readers who use the blog Language Translator gadget, which I have displayed at the top of my blogs, there has been an update from Google Language Tool.

The additional Language is Haitian Creole.

To add the additional code, simply copy the following, and paste it into your gadget. You should now have 55 workable languages translation options.

Language - Checking your settings.

There are quite a few places to check the Language settings for your blog - and computer. I covered all this previously, and now, it's time for an update.

Some bloggers still report that their blogs load in a foreign language. To ensure that all your settings are in your preferred language, let's say English, for this exercise, it's good to make sure ALL possibilities are covered.

The first place I would check, is the Windows Control Panel - Regional and Language Options. There are three options there. The Control Panel options will ensure that your computer is set to your preferred Language.

Also, if English is your preferred language, I recommend selecting English - US, and making allowances for their spelling differences.

My next choice would be to check the Browser settings. In this example, I have Firefox. To check the Language setting, click on Tools from the Toolbar - Menu Bar. Then select 'Content', then click 'Choose'.

The last steps are with Blogger. The first of these would be the Sign-on Screen. At the top and bottom of this screen, there are two language options shown. Click on them!

Language Selection option, at the bottom of the above image, takes you to the Language Selection.

These options are echoed on the Blogger Dashboard, too.

The last steps are with the actual blog, itself. The first Setting to check, is on the Basic Screen.
Make sure that Transliteration is disabled, and not set to one of the languages available.

The next option is on the Settings - Formatting Screen - Languages.

Now, the most important part - CLEAR YOUR BROWSER CACHE ! Re-boot your Browser! (Otherwise, it would nearly all be in vain. Your Browser will revert to what it had cached.)

Foreign Language Blog Translators

Most of my readers will appreciate the efforts that Chuck (Nitecruzr), and I, have put in with our Language Bar Translator. We now have five language-code sets, other than English, available for you.

These codes, and there's around 55 of them, will translate your whole blog, rather than just a page, or phrase. You can see the working example on any of my Roberto's Blogs, or Nitecruzr's blogs. Test it. If you speak and read a language, other than English, you can translate my blogs for your convenience.

If you have a blog, which is written in a language other than English, we have a limited amount of good news for you. Chuck and I have a range of blogs called Cumulus - the name was created when we developed our Cumulus Topics (Hidden Labels) gadget, and also our Cumulus Link Lists (Hidden BlogRoll). Chuck has recently opened eight (8) new blogs with the Cumulus name, to reflect the first six Foreign Language Translators, and subsequent codes, which I compiled and added to the applet. They are:

Cumulus-en - English
Cumulus-es - Spanish
Cumulus-hi - Hindi
Cumulus-id - Indonesian
Cumulus-fr - French
Cumulus-it - Italian
Cumulus-ru - Russian
Cumulus-zh - Chinese - (Traditional)

As mentioned previously, we have compiled 55 language codes, which can be applied to a simple html/javascript gadget, to be displayed on your blog. All these languages were compiled from interfaces developed by Google, on their Language Tools site. As soon as other languages become available, I will add them to the available codes and update on the Report (this) blog. Then, to update your Language Bar, it is as simple as copying the additional code and adding it to your gadget - copy and paste!

So, if you have a large 'bounce-rate' showing in your site visitor statistics, it may be because those visitors can't read your foreign language blog! If you have interesting content and the reader can translate it, then they'll tend to stay and read! Think about it!

Blog Language Translation Option - Update - December, 2009

The latest addition to the Language Bar, has added a small border around each of the displayed Flags, which Chuck, the Nitecruzr, and I, feel will add to the overall presentation. In our example, we have coloured the border. This is, of course, variable.

Chuck and I hope to add more languages, as they become available through Google Language Tool interface. Keep watching!

n.b. - One thing to remember, when using the Translator, is that you can only navigate to ONE (1) language, other than the blog's natural language, without navigating back to the original blog. In other words, if my Blog is in English, and you click on the Hungarian Flag, you have to come back to my English blog, before navigating to French, or another language!

Translate a French Blog - to...

Mesdames et Messieurs! Attention, s'il vous plaît!

Can you read, and perhaps, speak French? - Pouvez-vous lire, et peut-être, de parler français?

If you come across a blog, which is written in French, do you just look at the pictures, then go? Do you try to translate phrases, one at a time, in Google Translator? Or, do you wish you could just 'click' on a button, and translate the whole blog, to your language of choice - all at once?

Many of you know that my friend, Chuck, a.k.a. Nitecruzr, and me, Roberto, a.k.a. Grumpy1, have been burnin' the candle at both ends, over the last year, or so, with our efforts to get our Translator Bar working properly, and doing more languages (now 54). Well, together with that, we have done some extra testing, and believe we have a viable alternative to the en|?? - that's English to one of 50-odd other languages. We've also added some 'fancy-bits' - like a border around each flag!

We created some new blogs, under our Cumulus (Blogs) heading, for testing, as well as Publishing.
The codes will be presented as available, and "French" can be found...< HERE >

So, if you have a blog, written in French, try the code, in a Blogger html/javascript gadget, and give your Readers a chance to translate your writings. They'll appreciate it, I'm sure. Translating your Blog

It's been rather busy around Roberto's Blogs, lately. I have a tough task-master, and he's always giving me jobs to complete.

Chuck and I have been working on the Translator Bar gadget, which you see on our blogs. It hasn't been easy, as you could imagine - we don't speak, or read, languages other than English.

Some of the problems might be words which indicate a Country, AND something else - like Turkey. When we find a translation for that word, are we getting the Country, or the animal? Well, I assure you (hope) that the former is the answer to that question.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, we now have the 54 translatable languages which are available from the Google Language Tool. The difference between that Google Tool, and the Language Translator Bar which we use, is the ability to click on your Country's flag, and translate this entire blog - not just a word, or phrase.

Chuck has been checking all the script for the applet, and making sure it works properly, and I have been resourcing and compiling the codes for languages.

It's 'kewl' and, it works!

Blog Language Translation Option - Update Oct. 2009

The latest additions to the Language Bar, have increased the number of available languages to 54. The Language Tool Chuck and I are working on, has 57 Flags - which includes three (3) English to English translations - (for a future project - a Translator which is for a blog, other than one written in English, which will translate in the same way. For example, a French-base Tool, or a Spanish-base Tool. Keep watch).

Chuck and I hope to add more, as they become available through Google Language Tool interface.

** NB: For those readers who have been using this Language Translator for some time, Chuck came across a slight 'code hitch' recently. There is a small change necessary, which will make all functioning better. Click < HERE > to see his report. The following code employs the new code adjustment.

Left to Right Vs. Right to Left

You might think I am 'nuts', well, maybe so, and you are not the first! I have been called 'nuts' by the best!

One thing I noticed, and it's probably been noticed by many, but until I noticed it, I hadn't noticed it, is that if you want to 'highlight' some text, written in a 'Right to Left Language', such as Arabic, you can't do it 'Left to Right' with the cursor! You have to do it 'Right to Left'!

Maybe, I'm wrong, and that's just how MY computer does it, but I found that interesting. I use the Google Translator quite frequently, to translate threads on Blogger Help Group, and found that out, today.

Well, there's your piece of useless trivia for today!

Languages - How do I post in another Language?

How do I either post in a Foreign Language, or insert some Foreign Language text, in my posts?
The answer is simply twofold -

Language Translator Option - just add a translator to your blog, for your friends and readers!
Google Language Tools.

Here's 'some' of what I have typed, so far, into Japanese, Chinese and Russian - with Images.

You enter the text in English, or whatever language you speak, select the 'from' and 'to' languages, then click 'translate'. Then all you have to do is 'copy' and 'paste' to either your email, blog or wherever. It's surprising how much you can type in and get translated, as well.

I've done some large emails to my friend in Japan, and she can read it, understand it, and thinks I speak and write Japanese! hahaha One day, I will tell her the truth - before I get caught-out!

So, if you have a yen to send an email, or post a post in some foreign tongue, or even translate something you see, then Google Language Tools/translator is a pretty good place to start.

Also, there are over 50 'on the fly' languages available on my Translator Bar Option, at present, but I'm sure that more interfaces will become available soon.

Language Translator Set-up

One very handy option for your readers, is the ability to translate your Blog into their own language.

Google's Language Tool provides the information for that option.

The script for making the Language Bar, as it's called, is added to an HTML Page Element. The codes for the various Languages are added as they become available from Google. Interfacing a language would not be an easy job, and Google wouldn't have too many people on that particular job, either, I guess.

There are around 300+ languages being spoken in the world, today. There are about 50 available on Google Language Tool - as 'on the fly' translators. There are lots of Languages which you can use as a default language for your Browser, but only 54, or so, will currently work on the Translator/Language Bar option. The key-phrase here is 'on-the-fly' translation.

There languages such as Yiddish, as opposed to Hebrew, which is a language spoken by European and orthodox Jews, but, to my knowledge, is not specific to a country. So which flag do I use? Mmmm. I just used the Israeli flag.

There are also languages spoken in more than one country - eg: Portuguese, Spanish, English.

Yes, sure, there are box translators, which take a few words or phrases and translate them for you, but this Language Bar will actually translate your whole blog. Let's see how...

Each language Google presents, has a code. For instance, France has an ISO code 'fr'. England 'en', Germany 'de'.

The individual Country Flags should, but don't always, follow suit. See the next image.

So, to set-up the Language Bar on your Blog, you need to consider which Language will be the default. In my case it is English. So, all codes will translate from English 'en' to another language, say French 'fr'. So my code will contain the language translator request, "en|fr". That's English to French.

Next, I want to display a little Country Flag. I copy the images from the Flag section that I need, to a file folder on my computer. Then, I upload each one to my html Post Editor, to get the URL. That looks like this:

But, I only need the actual URL of the photo. That's -

This URL is then embedded in the Translator code for French. Remember your default language in this case, is English. This will work equally well for a default language from any Country, eg: France!

The embedded URL looks like this:-

Then this code is embedded in the Translator Bar code applet (the Gadget) in your html Page Element, along with any others you choose to make. Easy!

Translator Option - Use

As with all products, there is a learning curve. It's no different with the use of the Language Options available on the Report blog. If you look on this page, you'll see them - just waiting for you to 'click' on them.

Using the Language Option, or as Chuck calls it, the 'Multi-Lingual Translator', is easy. Once you have it installed correctly, on your blog, which is easy, it'll be a 'snap' to follow these instructions.

From my normal 'English' Language blog, choose the Language you want. There are currently 54 available, of which I have all displayed in this blog's sidebar.

If you don't recognise the 'flag', simply hover your mouse over each 'flag' and a 'pop-up' will describe the language available - on that 'flag'.

Once you have 'selected' the Language you want, Google Translator will navigate/transport you to that Language Screen. You can view one page per time, or the whole Blog. If you wish to view the 'Original English' again, simply 'click' the 'Back-Page Arrow' in the top left-hand corner of your screen.

Let's suppose you selected 'Greek' as the Language you preferred to view a page with. You'd click on the blue and white Greek Flag, and would be 'transported' to this following screen.

You'll notice when you look at the above image, there is a 'pop-up' showing. Hover your mouse over a word, or phrase, and you'll see Google has provided an option which allows you to make 'proper/decent' suggestions for better wording. Google realises that sometimes a word may vary in meaning, from region to region, or dialect, so they give you the chance to make suggestions which would be more suitable.

Apart from being able to view the entire Blog in the Language of choice, you can also access the Google Translator, as well.

There is one 'snag', however. You cannot change Languages from the Translation screen, to another language, without first navigating back to the 'mother blog' , otherwise, you get this screen notice ...

Pretty smart, eh? I think Google has done well, here, and I also believe there's a lot more Languages soon to be available. Keep watching!

Language Translator Option

As with most of you, my friend, Chuck, and me, Roberto, have friends, or acquaintances, in far-off lands, who do not use English as their main tongue. Even my ex-wife, being Thai, cannot make it entirely through one of my posts, without getting confused about the semantics of my language - meaning, grammar, spelling, or content, and having to clarify something. Then, I have to try to translate it for her. Thai is now available in my Sidebar Language Options.

Maybe, we should call it, the 'Lingo-Linker'? (Sounds too Australian, possibly).

I know these Translators have been around for 'ages', as I have seen them on other people's blogs. There appear to be many more languages than I have available, or at least, it seems that way.

The big difference with this Translator, is that it can translate your whole blog, not just words, or phrases, 'on the fly'. Chuck and I have knocked out some hours constructing this to a workable stage. Updating it is very easy.

This Multi-Lingual Translator, is from the Google Translator. There are, currently, only 55, or so, languages available, other than English, of which I have all on this Blog:-

It provides an 'on-the fly' translation of the whole Blog, and is extremely easy to install, too. Open an html/Javascript Page Element, and save the code in it. Done. The code is available for this Translator, from here, on the Report. Each Language Flag/Code has a 'modular' appearance, and is easily added into the 'main' code, as more Languages become available.

I think it's great. It took me all of 15 minutes, to add it to all my Blogs (over 20)... and, they all work! The hardest bit, and most tiring, was the accumulation of all the data - and the construction of the codes, based on Chuck's initial script for the Applet. Well, I suppose, as he calls me his apprentice, I have to do most of the work! Ha ha.

n.b. - Translator Bar doesn't work on a Private Blog!

Once you have it installed, click on any of the 'Flags' and the blog will be translated for you. When you've finished, click the 'Back' arrow in the top left-hand of your screen. The Language Translator will not translate multiple languages, at this time, so if you want to change languages, you have to navigate back to the 'mother ship' (blog), first, then choose another flag. Easy!

Languages Settings

Many Bloggers are describing problems with the Language of their Blogs. It just changed by itself! How do I change the language back to English? How do I...?

Blogger has done a lot of work on this Language module interface, and should be congratulated. It wouldn't have been easy, and I'm sure there will be more settling-in challenges. Well, the problem doesn't appear to be isolated to one particular country, either, but more related to Asian region AND the fact that a lot of the traffic is directed through Singnet/Singtel by ISPs, so it may only be temporary. Prior to April, I didn't know of a problem like this. Now, everyone seems to have it. Anyway, here's what I suggest to do.

There are quite a few places to change the Language. First, would be the Sign-on Screen. At the top and bottom of the screen, there are many options shown. If you can't read the links, Language is the seventh one across from the left, (or the third one in from the right). Click on it!

The Dashboard - Change Language Option

The Option, for English, on the Dashboard, is the tenth one down, (in case you can't read the language).
Click on it!

The Settings - Formatting Menu - Language Option

There is also a need to check the Settings - Formatting Menu Language Option. Click Settings from the Dashboard, or the Layout screen. Select Formatting and check the setting for Language.

Once everything else has been checked, or changed, also visit your Browser's Language Options. These following images are from Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7. Simply follow the numbers.

I hope this helps, though I have one bit of information. I have done all of the above and still, occasionally, have a Navbar in Thai, or a Blog Sign-on screen in Thai. Thankfully, my Blog Language has remained in English. "The best laid plans..." What I do is simply click 'Save Settings' again, and it's fixed. Pain in the neck, but it's fixed!

You may also need to check the Regional and Language Options from your Windows Control Panel.

Now, the most important part - CLEAR YOUR BROWSER CACHE ! Re-boot the Browser!
(Otherwise, it would nearly all be in vain. Your browser will revert to what it had cached)
